SQUASH IN A NUTSHELL
The origins
Squash originated in the mid-19th century at Harrow School in England. Pupils waiting their turn on the ‘rackets’ courts began hitting a hollow rubber ball against the walls of a building. Unlike a tennis ball, this one would squish (‘to squash’) against the wall, hence the name of the sport. The sport then developed into one of the mainstays of global racket sports.
Squash: The art of a one-on-one play and positioning
Often likened to a game of chess played at 150 km/h, squash demands exceptional reflexes. Both players share the same space, which requires perfect control of one’s positioning to dominate the ‘T’ (the centre of the court). In France, under the auspices of the French Squash Federation, the sport is experiencing a historic milestone with its official inclusion in the programme for the 2028 Olympic Games, boosting interest among players and the media.

Squash in a few key figures
Did you know?
The double-yellow-dot ball used by the pros barely bounces when it’s cold: you have to hit it hard to warm it up so it finally becomes playable. That’s what we call ‘warming up the ball’!
