PADEL IN A NUTSHELL

The origins

Padel originated from an ingenious idea in Mexico in 1969. Enrique Corcuera, lacking the space to build a full-size tennis court at home, created a smaller court surrounded by walls so that the balls wouldn’t go astray. Imported to Spain and then to Argentina, the sport took Europe by storm. Today, it has become the fastest-growing racket sport in the world.

Padel: The art of strategy and bouncing

Padel is played exclusively as a doubles game, making it the ultimate social sport. Although far less technically demanding than tennis when you first start out, it nevertheless requires a keen eye for the ball’s trajectory in order to use the glass walls to your advantage. In France, under the auspices of the FFT, padel is enjoying a golden age, with a surge in the number of courts and the organisation of major tournaments such as the Paris Major at the Roland-Garros stadium.

Unlike in tennis, a padel ball can touch the ground and then bounce off one or more walls before being hit. This completely changes the dynamics of the rally: in padel, defence is often the best form of attack
